MEDFORD, Mass. - The eighth-seeded Bowdoin College women's basketball team upset top-seeded Tufts University Jumbos, 60-54, in the NESCAC Championship Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Cousens Gym.

It is the first time in NESCAC Women's Basketball history that an eight seed has defeated a top seed and the win extends Bowdoin's streak of NESCAC Semifinal appearances. The Polar Bears, who have appeared in the NESCAC's "Final Four" all 13 years it has been competed, improve to 14-10 this season. They will travel to play at second-seeded Amherst at 5:30 next Saturday, February 23 in the NESCAC Semifinals. The Jumbos entered the weekend as the #7 team in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25. They fall to 23-2 on the year.

First-year Selena Lorrey finished with a team-high 11 points for Bowdoin, shooting 4 for 8 from the field and 3 of 7 from three-point land. Sophomore Sara Binkhorst added 10 points and seven rebounds. Dufault led Tufts with 13 points and six rebounds while Kate Barnosky finished with 11 points and eight boards.

Bowdoin led 29-25 at halftime as Lorrey scored eight points off the bench, knocking down a pair of three-point shots. The Polar Bears were 6 of 12 from long range in the first half while the Jumbos shot 1 of 11 from beyond the arc. Barnosky netted nine points in the first half for Tufts.

Tufts had the lead a pair of times in the first half at 3-0 and 25-23. Back-to-back three-point shots by Lorrey and junior Kirsten Prue gave Bowdoin the halftime advantage. The Polar Bears led by as many as seven points in the first half.

The Polar Bears pushed their lead to 11 at the 13:40 mark of the second half, 45-34, after a three by senior Kaitlin Donahoe. Over the next nine minutes the Jumbos went on a 16-4 to run. Senior Bre Dufault  gave Tufts the lead, 50-49, with a layup at the 4:23 mark.

Bowdoin fought right back with another three by Donahoe to go back up 52-50 before two free throws by Tufts sophomore Hannah Foley tied the score at 52. Sophomore Hayley Kanner put Tufts into the lead for the last time at 54-52.

Bowdoin scored the next four points at the charity stripe, going 4 for 6 at the line. The Polar Bears were on top 56-54 with 46 seconds remaining. Foley and sophomore Kelsey Morehead each missed three-pointers for Tufts leading to four more Bowdoin free throws to seal the game.

Bowdoin outshot Tufts 41.5 percent (17/41) to 32.8 percent (22/67) and out-rebounded the Jumbos, 38-35. The Polar Bears were a spectacular 11 for 19 from three-point territory. Tufts struggled from long range going 4 of 21.
