CAMDEN, N.J. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (18-6, 11-4 NJAC) came away with a hard-fought 55-48 victory at Rutgers-Camden (10-14, 3-12 NJAC) Feb. 9. Junior guard Floriana Borova (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill) led all players with 20 points, eight assists and four steals, and junior forward Dana Jeter (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) contributed 15 tallies and a game-best 15 rebounds.
During a first half that featured nine lead changes and a pair of ties, the Pioneers scored the final three points of the period to carry a 29-27 lead into the locker room. Borova posted 10 points and six assists during the opening 20 minutes, and Jeter nearly had a double-double with 10 tallies and nine rebounds.
WP could not expand its lead beyond five after the intermission, and a 12-4 Scarlet Raptor burst briefly handed Rutgers-Camden a 46-43 edge with 5:39 to play. Four straight Pioneer baskets put William Paterson back out in front (51-46, 3:42), and the WP defense forced the Raptors into 1-for-13 (.077) shooting during the game's final five minutes.
Sophomore forward Ashley Marfo (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) had eight points and nine rebounds for the Pioneers. WP is in second place in the conference standings, a half-game ahead of The College of New Jersey (10-4).
Brittany Turner led Rutgers-Camden with 16 points. Lillian Chukwueze had 14 tallies and 14 rebounds.
Already assured a spot in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament, William Paterson will finish regular-season play Wednesday, Feb. 13, at home against Ramapo at 6:00 p.m.
