No. 7 Montclair State Runs Away From New Jersey City, 79-36 for 23rd Victory

Jersey City, NJ – Sophomore forward Melissa Tobie (Elizabeth, NJ, Roselle Catholic) scored a game-high 19 points while freshman Shalette Brown (Somerset, NJ, Franklin Township) added a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds as Montclair State continued its winning ways as the Red Hawks remained unbeaten with a 79-36 win over New Jersey City University on Wednesday evening.

Senior Taylor Jeffers (Franklin Township, NJ, Franklin) had 17 points and eight rebounds for MSU, ranked No. 7 by D3Hoops.com and 9th in the latest USA Today Sports Division III Top 25 Coaches' Poll. Montclair upped its record to 23-0, 15-0 in the NJAC. The 23 wins are the most by Montclair since it won 23 during the 1989-90 campaign while its 14 league victories is its highest since that same season when it went 17-1 and won the NJAC regular-season championship.

MSU, which has already clinched the regular-season title and No. 1 tournament seed this year, defeated the Gothic Knights for the 20th consecutive time and improved to 51-3 all-time against NJCU, including a 76-41 win at home on December 12.

Montclair State, which posted a 40-plus point victory for the third time this season, trailed twice early in the game the last coming at 7-6 as NJCU's Ashley Vazquez score on a layup. But the Red Hawks would score the next 13 points to take control of the contest.

Brown, the seven-time NJAC Rookie of the Week, started the run with a layup and a pair of baskets by Jeffers, who had six points in the spree, made the score 13-7 with 14:42 to play. Brown added another bucket and, after a layup by Jeffers, finished off a fast break giving MSU a 19-7 advantage with 11:37 to go.

A jumper by Janitza Aquino (Kearny, NJ, Kearny) extended the lead to 27-11 with just under eight minutes to go and the lead grew to as many at 28 points at 44-16 when Tobie converted a pair of free throws with 1:17 left before the break.

Tobie had 15 points in the opening 20 minutes while Jeffers netted 13 as Montclair State shot 18-of-41 from the field while holding the Gothic Knights (5-18, 1-14 NJAC) to just 8-of-25 shooting. Brown registered her second straight and fourth double-double of the year with 10 points and 11 boards in the first half.

Junior Nicosia Henry (Bolingbrook, IL, Bolingbrook) finished with nine points and five steals for the Red Hawks , which dominated NJCU on the glass 53-21, including 21 offensive caroms.  

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, February 9 as they face Kean University at the Harwood Arena in Union, NJ at 1:00 pm.
