UR Women Grab 600th Program Victory

More news about: Rochester

Led by four players in double figures, the University of Rochester women's basketball team defeated a feisty Brandeis squad 72-58 in UAA action Sunday afternoon.  The win was the 600th in UR's program history (42 seasons).

Senior Jackie Walker led UR (14-4, 6-1 UAA) with 18 points while Ally Zywicki had her first career double-double with 12 points and a career high 10 assists.  Paige Aleski made four 3-pointers en route to 15 points and Breanna Madrazo had 10 points.

Brandeis (7-11, 1-6 UAA) was led by Kasey Dean's 14 points and four rebounds.  Janelle Rodriguez and Hanna Cain had 12 points each.  The Judges had been struggling offensively as of late, with the 58 points Sunday topping Brandeis' last two game totals combined.

The Judges built an early lead, showing no signs of a team that had lost five straight games.  Rodriguez had five points and Dean had four points in an early burst, building the Brandeis lead to 16-7.

Rochester then took its first lead 23-22 with just 6:42 remaining in the half on a Danielle McNabb basket.  McNabb was in foul trouble all game long, and that jumper was her only points of the day.

After the basket to take the lead, the home Yellowjackets would not relinquish the lead the rest of the game.  The final 6:42 of the first half was a 15-6 run for UR, giving them a lead of 36-28 at the break.

The first seven minutes of the second session saw the teams exchanging baskets, with the Rochester lead ranging from five to 10 points.

The middle section of the second half was all UR though, as the home team had a 15-4 run to put the game away.  Walker provided six points and Aleski added five in the stretch.  With 6:34 remaining, UR had a 17-point lead before ending the game with a 14 point margin.

The Yellowjackets used a season high 15 fast break points to run past the Judges.  UR shot 45.6% from the floor while Brandeis was 38.5% shooting.  Rochester dished out 20 assists on 26 baskets.

The Yellowjackets now sit atop the UAA standings with Emory at 6-1.  Washington University was upset in Cleveland today by Case Western Reserve, giving the Bears their second conference loss.

Rochester next travels to NYU on Friday for a tilt with the Violets before facing the Judges again a week from today on Sunday at 2 pm.
