CNU Returns Home With Dominant Win Over Peace, 76-37

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Rookie Brandi Holland scored a career-high 17 points and 12 different players factored into the scoring on Saturday, as Christopher Newport improved to 15-2 overall, 8-2 in USA South action with a dominant 76-37 win over William Peace. The Captains were playing in their first home game since December 15 and cruised to their fifth home win of the year.

The Captains suffocating defense got the better of the Pacers (5-12, 1-9), who knocked down just 10 shots in the game, shooting 20% from the field. CNU held Peace to just five made field goals in each half, and the Pacers were held empty from long range, going 0-8. 

Meanwhile, the Captains offense was off and running from the start, racing out to a 25-2 lead in the first 11 minutes of action. CNU spread the points around, looking inside to Camry Green for 10 points while five other players factored into the run.

At halftime, CNU was shooting 43.2% from the floor, led by the 5-for-9 effort by Green. Holland also had nine points, going 4-for-5 from the floor and adding three assists. 

After the intermission, the Captains offense continued to shine, shooting 50% from the floor in the second stanza. Holland added another eight points to lead the way, and finished with 17 points and five dimes. Green finished with 11 points to go with seven rebounds and two blocked shots, and junior Tia Perry rounded out the double figure scoring with 11 points and nine rebounds for CNU. 

Rookie Anika Trent also had a solid showing, scoring five points while grabbing six rebounds and adding a pair of blocks.

Peace was led by Derrica Jones, who finished with a double-double (11 pts, 11 reb). Krystal Williams had eight turnovers, but added nine points, three assists and three rebounds as well for the Pacers.

The Captains will return to action on Sunday, at 2:00 pm, as they host Meredith College (5-11, 2-8) in conference action.
