Tough Second Half Dooms Thunder

More news about: Trine
ANGOLA, Ind. - After a good start, the Trine University women's basketball team was unable to keep pace with the third ranked Hope College, falling 75-39. The Thunder now stand at 9-9 on the season and 3-6 in the MIAA.

The Thunder jumped out to a 4-0 lead holding the Flying Dutch to just a pair of free throws through the opening 3:38 as Trine led 8-2. Hope would start their barrage of three's as they took their first lead of the game at 15-14 with 11:02 to play. Trine would answer right back on their following possession as freshman Alivia Recker (Arlington, Ohio/Arlington) nailed a jumper. Hope though would finish the half out-scoring the Thunder 27-10 to lead 42-26 at the break. Trine was unable to stop Hope's three-point shooters in the first half, as nine of Hope's 14 field goals came from long range.

The two sides traded baskets early on the in second half, but the Thunder would go 6:30 without a field goal. However, the Trine defense helped them stay in the game at that point as they also held the Flying Dutch without a field goal for a similar six minute span. After ending their drought, it would be another six minutes before Trine would hit another field goal, and by then Hope had pushed their lead to almost 30 points with just 4:30 to play.

Sophomore Kelsey Henselmeier (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) was the only Trine player to score in double-digits, finishing the afternoon with 10 points and led the Thunder with three steals. Senior Sydney Spragg (Reading, Mich./Reading), sophomore Kayla Dunn (Larwill, Ind./Columbia City) and Recker each finished with eight points. Junior Megan Loveberry (Quincy, Mich./Quincy) pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

Trine hit nearly 50 percent from the floor in the first half (11-of-23, 47.8%) but managed just 4-of-19 (21.1%) shooting in the second half. Almost half of all Hope's field goals came on three-pointers (13-of-27).

Trine will head out on the road on January 23 when they head to Olivet for a 6:00 p.m. tip.
