Mesaris, Boggan Lead Lady Royals Past Drew, 63-44

MADISON, N.J. -- The duo of senior Erin Boggan (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) and sophomore Meredith Mesaris (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) combined for 38 points to lead The University of Scranton women's basketball team to a 63-44 victory over Drew University at Baldwin Gym on Wednesday evening.

Mesaris poured in a game-high 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting, and Boggan had 12 points on 6-for-8 from the field as Scranton improved to 12-4 overall and 4-1 in Landmark Conference play.

The Lady Royals jumped out to a double-digit lead five minutes into the game and led 14-2 at the 13:57 mark behind six early points from Boggan. The lead hovered around 10 most of the half until it Mesaris scored nine straight Scranton points and junior guard Alison Sweeney (Wall, N.J./St. Rose) ended the half with a 3-pointer for a 36-20 lead.

Scranton shot 45.5 percent (15-for-33) in the opening 20 minutes, including 4-for-8 from 3-point range.

The lead stretched to 20 points just before the midway point of the second half as Boggan had four points in a 9-0 run.

The Lady Royals also received four points, seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block from sophomore guard Lindsay Fluehr (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy). Sweeney added five assists, four steals and two rebounds, and senior forward Tayler Pallotta (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) had five rebounds, two blocks and two steals in 15 minutes off the bench.

Scranton finished shooting 38.5 percent (25-for-65) for the game, and won the rebounding battle, 48-38, and committed 18 turnovers. Thirteen players found their way into the scoring column and 11 played at least 10 minutes for the Lady Royals.

Drew (5-11, 1-4 Landmark) was led by senior guard Jennifer Mateo (Union City, N.J./Union City), who scored 11 points. The Rangers shot 30.8 percent (16-for-52) from the field while committing 22 turnovers.
