More news about: UW-Whitewater

Scoring the fewest points since January 26, 2011, twenty-fourth ranked UW-Whitewater saw its twelve game win streak against UW-Oshkosh come to an end 54-49 Wednesday at the Kolf Sports Center in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.  UW-W is 12-5 overall and 6-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and Oshkosh is 14-3 overall and also 6-2 in league play.

The Warhawks jumped out to a 6-0 lead, holding Oshkosh without a point until the 15:42 mark.  UW-W's margin hit double figures, 14-4, on a jumper by center Lisa Palmer at 12:39.  Halfway through the first half Oshkosh was still stuck on four points, as Whitewater led 14-5.  Whitewater's largest lead of the first half, 16-5 on a layin by senior forward Courtney Kumerow at 10:25, and at 6:45 on senior guard Sam Quandt made it 18-7.  The Titans came back within four, 18-14 and 20-16.  The Warhawks took a 22-16 lead into halftime.

Whitewater limited Oshkosh to 25% shooting from the field, but the Titans stayed close with the help of a 2-14 rebound advantage, with eleven of those boards coming on the offensive end for Oshkosh.  Whitewater did not attempt a free throw in the first half, while Oshkosh was 2-6.  Neither team had a player score in double figures in the first half.

Whitewater still led by seven, 34-27 with 11:18 left in the game, but a 9-1 Oshkosh run gave the Titans their first lead of the contest, 36-35 at 8:28.  UW-O's momentum continued, with their lead reaching 45-38.  UW-W junior guard Kaitlyn Thill hit a three, then stole the ball and fed Kumerow for a layup to pull within one, 45-44, and Kumerow followed with a pair of free throws to put the Warhawks back in front, 46-45 with 2:51 on the clock.  Oshkosh regained a four point lead, but junior guard Mary Merg's three with 0:26 left made it 50-49 Oshkosh.  The Titans went 4-4 from the line as UW-W tried to stop by clock.

Oshkosh made 19-22 foul shots in the second half, while Whitewater was going 9-14.  Both teams shot 31% from the floor for the game.

Kumerow's 15 points and six rebounds led Whitewater, the only Warhawk in double figures.  Thill had a game high five steals and Palmer led both teams with ten rebounds.  Katelyn Kuehl's 15 points led three double figure scorers for the Titans, along with 14 from Megan Wenig and 13 by Katie Kitzke.  Ashley Winterfeldt grabbed nine rebounds for UW-O.

UW-Whitewater will host UW-Stout Saturday at 6:00 in Kachel Gym of Williams Center.  The game, along with the men's game versus the Blue Devils at 4:00, is Treyton Kilar's Kids Day.
