CNU Women's Hoops Picks Up 650th Program Victory With Win at Mary Baldwin

STAUNTON, Va. -- The 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team kept their record pristine and picked up win No. 650 in the history of the program with a 60-24 victory at Mary Baldwin College on Wednesday night. The Captains improved to 12-0, 5-0 in the USA South, while the Fighting Squirrels fell to 0-12, 0-5. 

In the 41st season of CNU women's basketball, the Captains have compiled an impressive 62.9% winning percentage, going 650-384 over the history of the program. The win on Wednesday also improved the Captains all-time record against the USA South to 329-92, over a 78% winning mark. 

Rookie Kendra Stone led a balanced attack that saw 11 different Captains enter the scoring column and all but one of the 13 CNU players to see action get at least one rebound. Stone scored a game-high 13 points while grabbing seven rebounds, and fellow freshman Jordan Miller added nine points and eight boards. 

CNU pulled out to a 33-10 lead at halftime, as the defense posted an incredibly dominant effort. The Captains defense held the Squirrels to just 2-for-20 from the field, a 10% shooting effort. Meanwhile, the Captains shot just 35.9% on 14-of-39 shooting, but bursted out to a 23-point lead at the half. 

None of the Captains starters logged more than 12 minutes in the game, combining for just 20 of CNU's final 60 points. Senior Kelly Halverson led the group with seven points in just eight minutes of work. 

The Captains leader on the glass was Nicole Pandak, hauling in nine boards, adding four points, two assists and two blocked shots in 19 minutes on the floor in relief. 

Mary Baldwin got a game-high 13 rebounds from Tejava Ivory. Sheridan Lawrence had nine points and five rebounds for the Squirrels to lead the offense. 

The CNU defense held MBC to just 6-of-36 from the floor in the game, a 16.7% shooting effort. The team forced 27 turnovers and picked up 30 points off of giveaways. The Captains bench outscored MBC's 40-4. 

The road swing continues for CNU as the Captains will travel to Averett University (4-8, 3-2) this Saturday, January 12, with tip set for 6:00 pm.
