ROANOKE, Va.--The Hood College women's basketball team (4-8) lost a heartbreaker at Hollins University Monday night, falling 76-71 in overtime in its final nonconference game of the season.

Shakara Head registered her second collegiate double-double with team-highs of 19 points and 16 rebounds for the Blazers. Briana Lee set a new season-high with 16 points, including four threes, while Dyanna Prater chipped in 12 points and five assists for Hood.

Hood got off to a fast start scoring the first six points of the contest but Hollins responded with an 8-0 run of its own to leapfrog the Blazers just six minutes in. The rest of the stanza belonged to Head, who hit 5-of-7 from the field and 5-9 from the line for 15 first-half points. She scored five straight points at one stretch to give Hood its largest lead, 29-14, with 4:39 to go before halftime. Hood took a 33-22 advantage into the locker room.

Hollins wouldn't go away though and stepped up their defensive pressure in the second half while slowly chipping away at the double-figure deficit. Hollins pulled to within two at the 8:38 mark (46-44), but three different Blazers proceeded to sink three straight triples to regained a seven-point lead for the guests. Heather Boyce, Alexis Briscoe and Prater buried shots from behind the arc during that stretch.

Hollins made another charge and regained the upperhand for the first time since the early part of the opening half on a three-pointer from the top of the key by Jasmine Greene to make it 58-57 with 4:14 to go. Trailing 63-61 in the final minute, Hood scored five points in 16 seconds to turn the tables on Hollins and take a 66-63 lead with 22 seconds left. Lee banked in a three, then Prater forced a Hollins turnover and Rachel Kessler converted the layup in transition. But Hollins went down to the other end and got the ball to Carrie Cox, who hit her only shot of the game, a three-pointer, with 22 ticks left to tie it. Hood turned the ball over on its next possession, leaving the door open for Hollins. But, a jumper by Lacie Forrest rimmed out, sending the game into overtime.

Lee swished her fourth trey of the night to start the extra session, but Hood's lead was short-lived as that bucket would prove be the Blazers' only field goal in overtime. Hollins managed to hit some clutch baskets down the stretch as Greene scored seven of her game-high 30 points in the extra period.

Hood shot 38.3 percent from the field and made 7-of-17 from distance. The battle of the boards ended in a draw (38-38) and both teams shot right around 65 percent from the stripe.

Greene knocked down 10-of-15 from the field, including several acrobatic layups, in addition to 8-of-11 from the line for Hollins. Britney Campbell had 14 off the bench while Ella Oakley finished with 10 for the victors.

Hood hits the road again for a 6 p.m. tilt at Commonwealth Conference foe Albright College Wednesday evening.
