WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College women's basketball team led 33-17 with 7:43 left in the game, but had to hold off a furious Hamilton College rally to secure a 44-41 win in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Sunday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

The Mules move to 6-6 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while Hamilton falls to 5-6 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Both teams struggled from the field, with Colby shooting 30 percent (13-for-43) and Hamilton at 27 percent (17-for-63).
Diana Manduca (Portland, Maine) led the Mules with 12 points and six rebounds, while Carylanne Wolfington (Hallowell, Maine) finished with 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Jacky McLaughlin (Medfield, Mass.) added 10 points and Jen Nale (Waterville, Maine) chipped in six.
Dani Feigin (Scarsdale, N.Y.) led Hamilton with 12 points, four assists, and two steals. Madie Harlem (Oneonta, N.Y.) and Eliza Howe (Westport, Conn.) each had 10 points, while Kim Goidell (Centerport, N.Y.) had eight rebounds. Harlem also had six rebounds and four assists.
The first half was a struggle for both squads. Neither team managed a point for the opening 4:21 of play until Howe scored on a short jumper for Hamilton. Colby did not have a made field goal for the first 6:40 of the contest. With the score 10-10 with 5:39 to play, the Mules went on a 12-1 run to take a 22-11 halftime margin. McLaughlin had five points and an assist in the scoring run.
The second half also started slow, with the Mules scoring the first four points to take a 26-11 margin with 15:44 to play. Hamilton needed 5:36 to score its first points of the second half.
Colby took its biggest lead of the game at 16 points (33-17) with 7:43 to play, but Hamilton did not give up. The Continentals cut the lead to eight points at 35-27 with 3:59 to go, but the Mules hit four straight free throws to go up 39-27 with 3:07 remaining.
Feigin nailed a 3-point shot with 2:10 remaining, Howe hit a jumper with 1:42 to go, and Harlem scored on a drive to the basket with 1:09 left to cut the lead to 39-34.
The Mules appeared to hold off the rally when Manduca nailed two free throws with 53 seconds remaining for a 41-34 lead. However, Feigin nailed another 3-point shot 10 seconds later and suddenly it was a 41-37 game. Nale calmly sank two free throws for the Mules with 23 seconds left for a 43-37 lead and Gabe Donahue was 1-for-2 from the line with 13 seconds left for a 44-37 margin.
Hamilton ran out of time in its comeback chance. Samantha Graber (Roseland, N.J.) was fouled with 3.9 seconds left and hit both free throws. Colby immediately turned the ball over on the inbounds play and Goidell scored with one second to play to make it 44-41. The Mules got the ball in and the time ran out.
The Continentals helped their own cause by committing just seven turnovers to Colby's 18. The Mules had a 43-35 edge on the boards.
