Huskies Defeat D’Youville 75-55 and Improve to 10-0

SALEM, Mass.  –  Senior forward Jordan Grant (Concord, N.H.) led all scorers with a game-high 22 points and sophomore forward Rebecca Knight (Alfred, Maine/McAuley) recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the 16th-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 75-55 win over the D'Youville College Spartans in the first game of the Salem State Holiday Classic hosted by Salem State University at the O'Keefe Center in Salem, Mass.

With the win, Southern Maine remains undefeated at 10-0.  The loss is the second straight for the Spartans who fall to 3-6 on the season.

Grant was 8-for-12 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds in 24 minutes of action as all 15 Huskies played.  Knight was an outstanding 7-for-9 in 27 minutes of action and earned game-high honors with 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.  Junior forward Nash Biliew (Portland, Maine) had nine points and eight rebounds in 14 minutes off of the bench.  None of the Huskies' starters played more than 27 minutes.

Sophomore guard Bridget Andrews (Amherst, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) led the Spartans with 14 points on 4-for-7 shooting including a trio of threes.  Freshman forward Alexis Smith (Hamburg, N.Y.) added 11 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, N.Y.) added 11 points.

Despite suffering some shooting woes early in the game, Southern Maine used a strong defensive effort to force the Spartans into 27 turnovers, including 18 in the first half. With both teams struggling to put the ball in the basket and Southern Maine holding a modest 11-6 lead with 11:49 to play, the Huskies used a 9-2 run over the next six minutes to take control of the game.  Knight had four points in the run, while Grant added three for the 20-8 lead with 6:39 to play.  The Spartans committed seven of their 18 first-half turnovers during the stretch.  The Huskies retained a comfortable margin the rest of the way and took a 27-10 lead at the break. 

In the second half, USM nearly doubled its lead in the opening three minutes with a 12-2 run, including five straight points from senior guard Nicole Garland (Portland, Maine/Deering).  The Huskies were never threatened the rest of the way and led by as many as 26 points, 57-31, with 10:46 to play. 

Southern Maine scored 23 of its 75 points off of Spartan turnovers.  The Huskies also outrebounded D'Youville decisively 46-32, including a 25-6 edge on the offensive glass, accounting for 26 second-chance points.

Southern Maine returns to action at the Salem State Holiday Classic tomorrow at 12 p.m.  The Huskies will face Dominican (Ill.) in the third game of the tournament. D'Youville plays host Salem State at 4 p.m.
