GETTYSBURG, Pa. – No. 17 York (Pa.) College erased a 10-point second-half deficit to earn a hard-fought 63-58 victory in the home opener for the Gettysburg College women's basketball team on Sunday inside Bream Gym.

Gettysburg (1-3) was led by junior Caroline Murphy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) who finished with a career-high 20 points and nine rebounds. Classmate Rianna Doane (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) and freshman Jessica Porter (Narberth, Pa./Lower Merion) each tallied nine points and four rebounds.

Brittany Hicks tallied her fourth double-double in as many contests with 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead York (4-0). Kristen Haley added 16 points, nine boards, and six steals, while Aja Wallpher put up a dozen points and dished out seven assists.

The Bullets trailed only once in the opening half as a lay-up by Haley made it 8-6 in favor of York at 13:56. Porter knocked down a lay-up on a nice feed by Doane just 12 seconds later and the hosts maintained control for the rest of the period, leading by as many as six.

Gettysburg tallied the final four points of the opening stanza with a runner in the lane by junior Cori Younghans (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) at the buzzer setting the score at 26-21 at the half.

After York scored the initial bucket of the final period, the Bullets mounted a 9-2 run to grab their largest lead of the game. Doane sank a free throw that made it 35-25 with 15:25 to play.

York quickly chipped away at the deficit thanks to a dominant advantage on the offensive glass. The Spartans pulled down 10 offensive boards in the period leading to a 15-1 advantage in second-chance points. The visitors went on a 13-3 spurt over the next seven minutes after Gettysburg took its largest lead with an offensive board by Loreta Tonuzi leading to a three-pointer by Kelsey Murphy that set the score at 38-38 with 8:47 on the clock.

Gettysburg's Murphy knocked down her first triple of the season to regain the lead for Gettysburg at 41-38, but Tonuzi fired right back with a deep three-pointer to force another tie. Caroline Murphy and Younghans would connect on the Bullets' next two possessions to set the score at 45-41 with 7:30 to play.

York would take the lead 48-45 with a 7-0 run capped by a jumper by Wallpher at 4:46. Porter would account for Gettysburg's next three points to force the sixth tie of the game, but Wallpher came through with the unconventional three-point play to hand York the lead for the final time.

Despite trailing by six with a minute to go, the Bullets battled to the end and pulled to 54-53 with 34 seconds left after Caroline Murphy swiped the in-bounds pass, converted a lay-up, and nailed the ensuing free throw after being fouled.

York took care of business at the line, going 7-for-8 over the final 31 seconds. Hicks did most of the damage as she finished 12-for-16 at the charity stripe for the game, including five makes in the final moments.

Gettysburg turned in a strong showing on the defensive side of the ball, holding York to just 29.2 percent (19-for-65) shooting from the field, including 6-of-21 (28.6 percent) from deep. The Spartans made up for the poor shooting night with a 44-37 advantage on the boards and a 25-1 lead in second-chance points.

Murphy finished 7-for-9 from the field and knocked down all five of her free throw attempts. Doane knocked down a pair of three-pointers as part of her performance, while Younghans finished with seven points and four rebounds off the bench.

Gettysburg returns to action at home against Johns Hopkins University on Thursday, Nov. 29, at 6 p.m.
