Panthers defeat Oglethorpe, 69-51, in regular season finale

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Led by juniors Caroline King and Alex Adams with 17 points each, the Birmingham-Southern women's basketball team defeated Oglethorpe, 69-51, Saturday afternoon on Senior Day in the regular season finale for both teams.

The Panthers move to 14-11 overall and 9-7 in the SCAC, while the Stormy Petrels fall to 8-17 overall and 5-11 in the league.

It was Senior Day for BSC, with Sam DavidsonKristian MoodyAshton SpurginHaley Stracener, and Avery Tumlin being honored in a pregame ceremony.

BSC never trailed in the entire game, building to a 13-point lead, 16-3, by the 12:22 mark. OU cut it back to five, 17-12, on a nine-point run. The Panthers stayed ahead, although the Petrels cut the lead to two, twice, and led 29-22 at the half.

OU cut it to three, 29-26, in the first two minutes, after which BSC responded with 11 straight points to take a 14-point lead with 13:58 left to play. The Panthers kept a double-digit lead for the rest of the game, leading by as much as 21, twice down the stretch before winning by 18.

King and Adams led all players with 17 points apiece, followed by senior Ashton Spurgin with 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting. King also led on the boards with nine rebounds, and senior Kristian Moody was impressive with nine assists. Adams also led with four steals.

For Oglethorpe, Sarah Giles led with 12 points followed by Sarah Jones with 10. Giles also led with four rebounds, and Morghan Brandon led with four assists.

BSC out-rebounded the Petrels 47-26; turnovers were nearly even with Oglethorpe turning it over 19 times, twice more than BSC.

The Panthers are back in action next weekend, hosting the 2012 SCAC Championship for their first-ever Division III post-season appearance. BSC will play as the fourth seed in the East Division, facing the top West Division seed, facing either Southwestern or Colorado College in the quarterfinals on Friday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. at Homewood High School in Homewood, Ala.
