NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Senior Jerlisa Bowser hit a big-time runner in the lane with 3.3 seconds remaining to tie the game at 54, but Greensboro College stunned the Christopher Newport University Captains today, as Andrienne Terrell heaved a 35-foot prayer at the buzzer that rattled home for the win. CNU falls into a tie for second place in the USA South with Greensboro, both sporting 13-3 marks in the conference standings.

Greensboro led by six with 42 seconds remaining after a three-pointer from Terrell gave the Pride a 54-38 edge. The game was extremely contentious to that point, with the six-point lead being a game-high. The score was tied seven times and the lead changed nine times in the back-and-forth battle.

Down a game-high six with less than a minute to go, the Captains found an open look from sophomore Andrea Hobbs as Nicole Mitchell hit her in stride for the bucket. A foul on the other end sent Terrell to the line for 1-and-1, but she missed the front end and Mitchell grabbed one of her game-high 13 boards.

It was Mitchell to Hobbs again on the other end, cutting to the basket and getting an easy layup on the fast break to make it 54-52 with 17 seconds remaining.

Greensboro fumbled the inbounds play and gave CNU what looked to be the final possession with a chance to tie with a two or pull ahead with a three. Head coach Jon Waters called a timeout and the Captains designed the play to go through Bowser. The senior, struggling through an 0-for-4 night, drove to the basket and hit a floater in the lane to tie things up at 54 with 3.3 seconds showing on the clock.

The Pride inbounded directly to Terrell who sprinted up the left side of the floor. As she crossed the time line, she picked up her dribble and launched the three from 35-feet. The basket went down and Greensboro pulled out the stunning victory, 57-54.

Sophomores Tia Perry and Nicole Mitchell each finished with double-doubles in the game. Perry scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Mitchell scored 13 and hauled in 13 boards. Hobbs had six points, five assists and four rebounds off the bench.

Greensboro was led by Preseason All-American Danielle Duncan, scoring a game-high 22 points with nine rebounds. She also had three blocks and three assists. Terrell hit three triples and finished with 11 points after the gamewinner.

CNU falls into a tie for second with Greensboro with two games left to play. The Captains will head to Shenandoah University on Wednesday, February 15, for a conference doubleheader set to begin at 5:30 pm.  CNU will then return home for Senior Night in the Play 4Kay Breast Cancer Awareness game next Saturday, February 18, against Peace College.
