The Centre women's basketball team's 16-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of Birmingham Southern on Friday as the Colonels fell behind early and eventually dropped a 72-60 decision to the Panthers.

It took a 3-point barrage from Birmingham Southern to end the streak as the Panthers shot 12-of-22 (55 percent) from distance. Nearly every Centre attempt to climb back in the game was answered with timely shots from outside, many coming from Kristian Moody, who led Birmingham Southern with 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting from 3-point range.

Centre opened the with the first five points of the game, only to see Birmingham Southern answer a pair of 3-pointers and the next eight points. There were three lead changes and three ties in the early moments before the Panthers put together a 10-0 run, turning a 14-13 Centre lead into a 23-14 deficit with 2:24 to go in the first half.  

The Colonels cut the margin to 26-19 by halftime, but it was as close as they would get. Moody sank her next three 3-point attempts and scored 10 points as BSC outscored Centre 16-4 over the first four minutes of the second half. 

The Panthers led 42-32 after that surge and maintained control the rest of the way. Maggie Prewitt (Mount Sterling, Ky.) scored the next five points only to see Moody answer with another 3-pointer. Later, Centre scored six straight to cut the margin to 11 at 48-37, but Erin Moore followed with a 3-pointer that started a 7-0 Panthers run. Birmingham Southern extended its lead to as many as 21 points just inside the 3:00 mark before Centre closed the game on a 9-0 run.

Prewitt finished with 17 points to lead all scorers while Lauren Huter (Louisville, Ky.) andChelsea Benham (Taswell, Ind.) each followed with seven. Birmingham Southern held a 34-18 rebounding advantage and a 46 percent (19-of-41) to 36 percent (15-of-42) from the field.

The Colonels fall to 19-2 overall with a 12-1 record in the SCAC while Birmingham Southern moves to 12-11 overall and 7-7 in league play. Centre continues its road trip with a game at Oglethorpe on Sunday at 1 p.m.
