Women's Basketball Can't Hold Lead in Overtime Loss to Rhodes

San Antonio - Trinity's women's basketball team let a win slip away in the final seconds, leading to a 90-97 overtime loss to Rhodes College on Friday night.

Trinity (7-11, 5-4) had possession and a two-point lead with 2.4 seconds to play, but Rhodes stole the inbounds pass, and dropped in a layup with 0.6 on the clock to force overtime.

The Tigers battled back from a seven-point deficit (63-70) with less than four minutes to play, tying the game with a 7-0 run that ended at the 2:01 mark.  Both teams traded scoreless possessions after that, but Rhodes edged back in front by making 1-2 from the foul line with just 86 seconds remaining.

Rhodes then failed to capitalize after a Trinity turnover, and Murphy Burns drew a foul for the Tigers with 39 seconds left.  She nailed both free throws to put Trinity up 73-72, then Rhodes missed a layup that would have put them back in front.  Trinity's Hannah Coley then hit two more free throws after a Rhodes foul, and the Tigers led by three with 14 seconds to play.

Rhodes missed a three-point try, but Trinity committed an off-the-ball foul with 2.4 seconds to put Amy Handelman on the line for the Lynx.  She made the first, then intentionally missed the second to allow Rhodes to try for a rebound and a put-back.  Handelman missed the rim, though, and the ball went back to Trinity for a final play.

After the Tiger turnover that set up the game-tying shot, Rhodes quickly jumped out to a five-point lead in overtime, starting with a three-point play on their first possession.  Trinity hit 3-7 from the field in the final period, while Rhodes hit its first four shots, and finished 5-6 in overtime.

Burns and Coley both played more than 40 minutes in the game for the Tigers, and accounted for nearly 75% of the team's offense.  Coley hit 7-14 overall from the field, including 2-5 three-pointers.  She also had five rebounds and a team-best five assists.  Coley also knocked down 12-12 from the foul line.

Even more impressive was Burns, who dropped in 39 points in the game, which is tied for the fourth-best total in school history for a single game.  Burns hit 12-29 from the field and 5-13 from three-point range.  She also connected on 10-14 from the free throw line.

Burns ties Krista Prato-Matthews for fourth on Trinity's top scoring list for a single game.  Jennifer Warren hit 40 points twice in 1995 - including a game against Centre in which she tied the school record.  Setting the initial record was Trinity Athletics Hall of Famer Terri Hailey, who scored 42 points in 1980.

Sarah Johnson led Rhodes with 20 points and 10 rebounds, but her most important points came in the final seconds of regulation.  It was Johnson who stepped in front of the inbounds pass, and without hesitation, hoisted a game-saving layup.  Handelman also finished with a double-double for the Lynx, posting 13 points and a game-best 11 boards.

Both teams were virtually identical (42.5% for Rhodes, 42.6% for Trinity) shooting the ball, but Rhodes out-rebounded Trinity 53-38, and collected 22 of those on the offensive glass.  That resulted in a 26-9 advantage on second-chance points for the Lynx.

Trinity will return to action on Sunday afternoon, facing off against Millsaps College at 12:00 p.m.  The Tigers remain in second place in the SCAC West Division, holding a half-game lead over Colorado College.
