Claremont, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Women's Basketball team used a 14-0 run late in the first half to break open a close game and capture a 62-44 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.

The win improves the Athenas to 11-7 overall and 5-2 in the SCIAC, while the Sagehens slip to 3-15 overall and 1-6 in league play. Frannie Hemmelgarn led the way for CMS with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while senior forward Asha Gipson (San Diego, Calif.) had six points and a game-high 12 rebounds for Pomona-Pitzer.

After trailing 8-0 early, the Sagehens battled back to tie the score at 16-16 on the second three-pointer of the day from freshman forward Maria Weyhrauch (Juneau, Alaska) with 8:22 left in the half.

However, the Athenas then scored the next 14 points to take control. Kimberly Scamman started the run with a lay-up with 7:28 left in the half, and Hemmelgarn finished it off with a short jumper with 3:24 to play in the first stanza. A pair of Gipson foul shots made the score 32-20 at the half.

A three-pointer from sophomore guard Emi Hashizume (San Mateo, Calif.) had Pomona-Pitzer within 40-28 with 14:37 left, but the pressure defense of the Athenas took its toll, as they rattled off an 11-0 run to pull ahead 51-28 and put the game away.

Scamman added 13 points, five assists and five steals for CMS, which had 24 steals as a team, leading to a 22-2 advantage in fast break points. The Sagehens did not have a player in double-figures in scoring, as Hashizume and junior guard Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the way with eight points apiece.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Occidental to begin the second half of the conference schedule.
