Beavers turn back Green Mountain

POULTNEY, Vt. -- The University of Maine at Farmington put together a 24-11 lead at halftime en route to a 61-49 victory over Green Mountain College tonight in North Atlantic Conference women's basketball action.

The Beavers (6-10 overall) evened their conference record at 5-5 and are scheduled to visit Castleton State College Saturday. Tomorrow's game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. with men's contest to follow. The Eagles dropped to 2-14 (0-11).

Holly Oliver (Belgrade Lakes, Maine) led UMF with 14 points and eight rebounds. Kenni Norton (Strong, Maine) added eight points for the Beavers as 10 player reached the scoring column, while Kelsey Graffam (Falmouth, Maine) also hauled in eight rebounds.

The Beavers only connected on 29.3 percent (22-75) off their shots, but made a season-low seven turnovers.

Millicent Hopper scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Green Mountain with Chanleigh Casey adding eight points and 13 rebounds and Chelsea Paul pitched in 12 points and nine caroms.

Tied at 6-6, the Beavers outscored the Eagles 12-3 over a 9:29 span -- enduring a five-minute stretch without a basket -- in the opening half to take an 18-9 advantage with 4:12 left in the second half. UMF held the Eagles without a field goal for nearly eight minutes during that time.

Back-to-back layups by Bianca Stoutamyer (Madison, Maine) allowed UMF to enter the break with a 24-11 command.

The Beavers maintained a double-digit advantage in the second half, nurturing their lead to 47-29 on an Oliver bucket, but Green Mountain scored the game's next 10 points to trim the lead to 47-39 with 5:55 to play. The Eagles cut the deficit to 50-43 on a Hopper three-point play with 4:15 to go, but Norton answered with a 3-pointer to help UMF hold on for the 61-49 lead.
