Diplomats Hold Off Ursinus

LANCASTER, Pa. - Kristina McCarthy notched her second straight double-double with 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds and Alexa Barbush totaled a game-high 18 points to lift the Franklin & Marshall women's basketball team to a 64-52 victory over visiting Ursinus on Tuesday night at the Mayser Center. The Diplomats even their record at 2-2 (2-0 CC) with the win, while the Bears drop to 3-2 (0-1 CC).

F&M never trailed in the contest and jumped out to an early double-digit advantage behind some high-quality shooting in the opening half. Leading 10-8 with just under 16 minutes remaining in the first stanza, the Diplomats went on a 10-0 run over the next five minutes to extend their lead to 12. The strong shooting continued for the remainder of the half as F&M led by as many as 15 before taking a 34-20 lead into the intermission.

Ursinus wouldn't go away easily, however, as it slowly chipped away at the F&M advantage in the second half. The Bears got back within a single-digit deficit on a three-pointer by Kristy George at the 14:46 to bring the score to 41-33.

The Bears later pulled within three of the Diplomats following a transition jumper by Lindsay Teuber at the top of the key with six minutes left, but the visitors would get no closer as the Diplomats outscored the Bears 15-6 throughout the closing minutes to wrap up the victory. 

McCarthy was a force in the low post for F&M, consistently finding inside position for scores underneath for her second career double-double, while Barbush posted a well-rounded line with five assists, three steals and three boards to go along with her 18 points. Allison Bauer also reached double figures for the Diplomats with 12 points, while Megan Pauley added eight points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Alli Rosati led the way for Ursinus with 14 points. Teuber tallied a game-high 13 rebounds to go with six points and seven assists in the loss.

F&M returns to the court on Saturday, Dec. 3 against McDaniel. Tip-off is set for 2:00 pm at the Mayser Center.
