Captains Win Over Mary Baldwin on the Road, 73-37

STAUNTON, Va. -- The Christopher Newport University women's basketball team forced a season-high 28 turnovers and held Mary Baldwin College (4-10, 2-8) to 31% shooting en route to a ninth straight victory, 73-37. The Captains improved to 14-3 overall, 9-1 in USA South action, as three players finished in double figures.

CNU continued to showcase strong defensive pressure, forcing 28 turnovers with 20 steals. Leading the way was sophomore Tia Perry, with four thefts, while Jerlisa Bowser and Nicole Mitchell each  grabbed three steals in the game. The Captains scored 42 points off of turnovers in the game

Christopher Newport opened up a 17-point lead in the first half, led by Bowser in the opening stanza. The senior guard scored nine points, knocking down a trio of three-pointers, while Perry added seven points and three rebounds.

Mary Baldwin was led by Sabrina Desper, scoring seven points and adding four rebounds in the frame. She had three field goals while the Squirrels were held to just seven made baskets in the first half.

In the second half, CNU built the lead to as many as 38 points as the team spread the scoring around. Eleven different players finished in the scoring column and eight players scored six or more points. Fourteen different players grabbed at least one rebound in the game for CNU.

CNU shot 43.2% in the second half, raising the team shooting percentage for the game to 40.5% (30-74). Mary Baldwin was held to just six shots in the second half, held to 26.1% shooting (6-23).

Desper finished with a game-high 13 points, adding seven rebounds for the Squirrels. Shanice Miles had nine points and Shamand Washington added eight.

Mitchell and senior Lauren Gural led the Captains with eight rebounds, as CNU outrebounded Mary Baldwin 50-31. Rookie Camry Green chipped in 11 points in the game, tying Perry for the team high, while Bowser rounded out the double-figure scoring with 10.

CNU returns to action this Saturday, January 28 as they travel to Methodist University. The Monarchs handed CNU it's lone conference loss in December, 64-60. The game will tip at 2:00 pm in Fayetteville.
