Washington University in St. Louis freshman Melissa Gilkey notched the first double-double of her career with 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds to lead the No. 7-ranked Bears to a 69-42 win over Brandeis University in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Friday night at the WU Field House.

Gilkey scored nine of her 11 points from the free-throw line. Senior Claire Schaeperkoetter also finished with 11 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Freshman Alyssa Johanson, senior Brianne Monahan, and freshman Maddy Scheppers added seven points each.

Washington U. shot 39.6 percent from the field (19-48), including 53.3 percent (8-15) from beyond the arc. The Bears held Brandeis to 35.4 percent shooting from the field (17-48), and just 11.1 percent (1-9) from three-point range. Washington U. scored 23 points from the free-throw line (23-34), while the Judges finished 7-18 from the free-throw line.  

After trailing 5-0 early in the game, the Bears battled back to take their first lead at 8-7 on a free throw by Johanson with 14:24 left in the half. Brandeis regained a 13-12 advantage on a second-chance basket with 10:55, but Washington U. went on a 10-0 run, capped by a three-pointer by Schaeperkoetter, over the next 4:25 to take a 22-13 lead. The Judges answered with six-straight points, before another three-pointer by Schaeperkoetter gave the Bears a 25-19 lead with 4:48 left in the half. Brandeis got to within three (27-24) with 3:11 to play in the first half, but Washington U. outscored the Judges 5-2 to end the half with a 33-26 lead.

The Bears stretched their lead to 12 points (42-30) on a pair of free throws by Schaeperkoetter with 14 minutes left in the second half. Brandeis got to within eight (42-34) with 10:08 remaining in the game, before a free throw by junior Annie Sayers and a basket by Johanson made it 45-34 in favor of the Bears with 9:42 left. The Bears held Brandeis to just two field-goals in the final 12 minutes of the game, and Washington U. pulled away with a 19-5 run over the final six minutes to earn the 17-point win. Washington U. made four three-pointers during that stretch, including two by sophomore Jessy Rosen, who finished with a career-high six points.

Washington U. (13-2, 3-1 UAA) hosts New York University in another UAA contest on Sunday, Jan. 22. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at the WU Field House. New York (9-6, 1-3 UAA) suffered a 77-55 loss at No. 2 University of Chicago on Friday night.
