Husson builds lead, turns back Beavers

BANGOR -- Husson University amassed a 19-point lead to hold off the University of Maine at Farmington for a 70-58 victory over the Beavers in North Atlantic Conference women's basketball action tonight at Newman Gymnasium.

The Beavers dropped to 4-10 overall and 3-5 in the NAC. UMF is scheduled to host Maine Maritime Academy Saturday at 1 p.m. (men to follow). The Eagles improved to 8-7 (8-1)

Emma Morrison (Saco, Maine) made all 10 of her free-throw attempts and finished with a career-best 16 points for the Beavers, while Lindsay Ranquist (Owls Head, Maine) pitched in 11 points and Paige Saunders (Surry, Maine) provided eight points and game-high 10 rebounds. Saunders and Kenni Norton (Strong, Maine) each blocked three shots for the Beavers.

Brianna Hanscom scored 14 points to lead the Eagles with Stephanie Comstock chipping in 13 points and Kelli Murray adding 10 points.

Husson connected on 46.3 percent (25-54), while the Beavers were 32.3 percent (21-65), including misfiring on all 15 of their 3-point attempts.

The Eagles put together a 10-2 run midway through the first to take a 20-10 advantage over UMF with 9:22 to go until halftime. The lead grew to 33-20 on a pair of Amanda Gifford free throws, but Morrison, Ranquist and Bianca Stoutamyer (Madison, Maine) each scored to help the Beavers knock the lead down to 33-26 at intermission.

Expanding upon its halftime lead, Husson outscored UMF 23-11 over the first 12:35 minutes of the second half to take a 56-37 command on a Haley McGee layup. Bookended by a pair of Ranquist layups, the Beavers used an 8-0 run to trim the lead down to 61-52 with 3:48 to play, but Jade Keezer responded with a 3-pointer and Husson led by more than 10 points the rest of the way in sealing the 70-58 victory.
