Falcons Squash Yellowjackets, 65-44

Four Falcons scored in double-digits to lead the women's basketball team to a 65-44 victory over UW-Superior Wednesday at the Karges Center.
 
The Falcons, who came into the game ranked No. 17 in the latest D3Hoops.com poll, were lead by senior Alise Holst (Plainview, MN, Plainview-Elgin-Millville) who led all players with 16 points.  She finished 6-9 from the field, 2-3 from the free throw line and 2-3 from the three-point range.
 
The Falcons used a strong shooting performance to put the Yellowjackets away. UWRF came out red hot in the second half, shooting 14-27 from the field for 51.85 percent.  The Falcon defense held UWS to a mere five made shots from the field during the second half.  Superior was 5-21 during the half in which the Falcons completely dominated. 
 
With just over 12 minutes to play, the Falcons would take their largest lead of the night, 26, after a made layup by Brittany Gregorich (Altoona, WI, Altoona).  After that, the closest the Yellowjackets would come was within 20 points, as the Falcons were in control throughout the entire second half.  B. Gregorich would end the game with 14 points and seven rebounds.
 
Holst also led the Falcons with eight rebounds. As a team, the Falcons outrebounded the Yellowjackets 45-25 en route to their sixth conference victory of the season.  The Falcons have now played every WIAC school once, for a 6-2 record for the first half of the conference schedule.
 
UWRF took full advantage of their second chances to score.  As a team, the Falcons scored 12 second chance points, while holding the Yellowjackets to just four. The Falcons also had a 16-6 advantage off of points in the paint.
 
The Falcon defense was cunning; taking 15 steals throughout the night.  Tiffany Gregorich (Altoona, WI, Altoona) would have five of those and Maranda Dohrn (Lake City, MN, Lake City), three.  T. Gregorich also had 11 points on the night.
 
Nikki Guhr (Muskego, WI, Muskego) rounded out the double-digit scoring.  She ended the contest with 10 points and two steals.
 
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 14-3 overall and 6-2 in the WIAC.  They are 5-1 at the Karges Center.  Superior meanwhile, falls to 9-7 overall and 3-5 in the WIAC.  UWRF is now 52-19 all time against the Yellowjackets.
 
Up next for the Falcons is a pivotal matchup against UW-Stevens Point.  The Falcons beat Stevens Point 67-63 at the Karges Center on Jan. 4.  The Pointers are currently ranked No. 15 in the latest D3Hoops.com poll, the Falcons No. 17.  Both teams are currently 6-2 in the WIAC, which puts them in a three-way tie for second place with La Crosse in the WIAC standings.
 
Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 21 in Stevens Point.  UWRF is 26-45 all time against the Pointers.
