Second Half Surge Carries Shorewomen to 67-58 Win

(Carlisle, Pa.) –The Dickinson College women's basketball team dropped a 67-58 decision to visiting Washington College on Thursday night. The Devils played even with the Shorewomen for the better part of the game until a big run in the second half secured the win for Washington.

 

The Red Devils struck first and led for the opening 10 minutes, pulling in front, 12-7, at the 12:14 mark. Washington answered to tie the game, 12-12. The teams traded field-goals, playing to seven ties over the course of the first half. The Shorewomen pulled in front, holding a slim 29-28 advantage at the break.

 

Dickinson tied the game to open the second half but Washington held the Devils scoreless over a stretch five minutes, going on a 13-0 run to take a 42-29 lead with 13:08 remaining in the game.

 

Washington led by 15 with just over three minutes remaining in regulation but the Devils weren't done yet. They fought their way back into it, cutting the deficit to seven at the one minute mark. The Shorewomen would hold on, however, converting six straight free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

 

Sally O'Donnell led Washington (9-5, 4-5) with 14 points while Latisha Pledger controlled a game-high 12 rebounds.

 

Senior Taylor Miller (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) led the Red Devils with a game-high 20 points, adding three assists and three steals. She was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line as well. Junior Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) added 13 points and four rebounds, hitting 5-of-7 from the stripe.

 

Dana Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) scored seven points and controlled six rebounds. Belma Mekic (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) tallied six points, six rebounds and a pair of assists while first-year Sarah Phillips (West Amwell, N.J./South Hunterdon) chipped in with six points as well.

 

The Red Devils slip to 2-12 overall and 2-7 in the Centennial Conference. They are home again on Saturday, hosting Swarthmore College at 2:00 pm.
