CASTLETON, Vt. Vanessa Powers (Marshfield, Vt.) led five Spartans in double figures, and the Castleton defense limited Colby-Sawyer to just 16.1% shooting from the field to earn a 61-32 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) win Saturday afternoon at Glenbrook Gym.

Powers added eight rebounds, narrowly missing her second-straight double-double, and went 7-for-13 from the field in the win. Christine Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) added a dozen points and six assists, while Kelly Conway (Rutland, Vt.) and Tarryn Bolognani (Whitingham, Vt.) each tossed in 11 points. Freshman Meghan O'Sullivan (Merrick, N.Y.) rounded out the Spartans in double-figures with 10, to go along with seven boards and two blocks.

Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) was the only Charger in double-figures with 10, all of which came in the first half. Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) added eight points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Castleton never trailed in the contest, opening the game with a 7-0 run as Powers and O'Sullivan sandwiched a pair of buckets around a Conway three.

Colby-Sawyer kept pace, getting the lead down four (14-10) on a DeSanty lay-up at the ten-minute mark, but the Spartans blew the game open with a 17-1 run over the next six minutes. Conway added another three, and Jaques canned a pair to lead the surge.

The Spartans pushed the lead to as many as 30 (54-24) on a Conway jumper with 8:31 remaining, before settling in for the 29-point win.

Castleton was efficient on the offensive end, dolling out 18 assists on 25 field goals while turning the ball over just 10 times. The Spartan defense forced 16 turnovers and limited the high-scoring Colby-Sawyer offense – the Chargers entered the game averaging a league-best 71 points – to just nine field goals.

Castleton returns to action Thursday when the Spartans travel to Johnson State for a 7:30 pm NAC tip-off. Colby-Sawyer is at Middlebury for a non-league game on Tuesday at 5:30 pm.
