Goda Nets 1,000th; Paces MMA Victory

More news about: Maine Maritime

CASTINE, Maine – Sam Goda (Eliot, Maine) needed five points to become the seventh woman at Maine Maritime Academy to score 1,000 points in her career. The Mariners' senior dumped in 27 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead Maine Maritime (5-5, 2-2) to a 68-59 win over Colby-Sawyer, handing the Chargers (8-3, 4-1) their first setback in North Atlantic Conference play in the process.

Goda set the tone for the night early, getting her 1,000th point 36 seconds in. She hit a bucket and one on the first possession, then cashed in on a Leah Jackson (Dedham, Maine) steal to carve her name into the Maine Maritime record book.

Goda helped Maine Maritime to an 8-0 run at the outset.

The Mariners opening run was short-lived in a game that saw the score tied six times and the lead change hands 10 times. Colby-Sawyer held a three-point lead, 57-54, with 5:22 remaining before Jackson tied it up on a pair of possessions. She clicked on a jumper before hitting on the front-end of a pair a trip later to make it 57-57.

Jackson finished the night with 10. The Mariners cashed in on 19-of-24 trips to the line, while Colby Sawyer only made good on 9-of-16.

The Chargers couldn't get several second chance shots to fall on the possession after Jackson's free throw, but Bekah Campbell (Corinth, Maine) finally secured the ball for MMA. The missed opportunities spelled the beginning of the end for Colby-Sawyer.

Goda gave the Mariners the lead on the next trip before Sammi Lehr (Cohasset, Mass.) knotted it for the final time on the next Colby-Sawyer possession. Goda responded with three-points the hard way to put Maine Maritime in front for good. Courtney Dufour (Augusta, Maine) who scored 10 on the night, doubled the lead on the next possession with her third and final trey of the evening.

Colby-Sawyer got 15 points out of Ashley Fruzzetti (Raynham, Mass.), who drained five three-pointers on the night. Cailin Bullet (Millbury, Mass.) recorded 11 points and five assists, while Lehr contributed eight points and a team-high six rebounds. Kelsey Cahill (Cumberland, R.I.) posted six points and as many boards.

In addition to her 10 points, Jackson grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and had three steals. Campbell recorded seven rebounds and a pair of blocks for MMA.

The Mariners return to North Atlantic Conference action tomorrow afternoon against New England College. The Chargers head up to Bangor to take on Husson in North Atlantic play.
