Calvin Uses Defense To Gain 74-38 Win at Luther

DECORAH, IA - Calvin improved to 11-0 on the year with a 74-38 victory at Luther College Saturday afternoon. The Knights used swarming man-to-man defense to gain the win as Luther shot just 22.2 percent from the field including just 17.9 percent in the second half.

Meanwhile, Calvin connected on 18 of its first 25 attempts from the field in vaulting out to a 42-19 halftime advantage.

Calvin also connected on eight three-pointers in the win led by junior guard Kelsey Irwin who was 4-for-5 from three-point range to finish with a game-high 12 points. Junior Carissa Verkaik was next with 11 points to go with eight rebounds and six blocked shots while junior Julia Hilbrands came off the bench to provide 10 points and nine rebounds.

In scoring 11 points on Saturday, Carissa Verkaik moves past Kerry Walters for third place on the Calvin career scoring list. Verkaik currently has 1,333 points in her career with Walters now fourth at 1,332 points.

All 15 members of Calvin's team received at least nine minutes of playing time and 14 of the 15 entered the scoring column.

The Knights return to action next Wednesday, traveling to Kalamazoo for a 6 p.m. conference game.
