WASHINGTON – The Cardinals saw their nine-game winning streak come to a close on Saturday after Washington College downed CUA 65-61 in the championship of the Fairfield Inn Holiday Tournament.  Both of CUA's losses this season have come vs. WC.  Jill Woerner and Claire McEvily were named to the All-Tournament Team for CUA.

CUA led by six at halftime, but that lead quickly evaporated in the second, with Washington College scoring eight of the first ten points to tie things at 36.  Latisha Pledger's basket then gave the Shorewomen a 38-36 advantage with 18:01 remaining in the game.

A Holly Janicki layup and McEvily jumper around the 15-minute mark put CUA on top 46-43, but Sally O'Donnell's 3-pointer down the other end knotted the score at 46.

The Cardinals responded by scoring eight straight, capped by Emily Grabiak's trifecta, but again the Shorewomen had an answer, this time scoring 10 straight to surge in front 56-54 with 6:35 on the clock.

One minute later, Rachel Ferri drilled a three for CUA to put the home team in front by two, but a pair of Meghan Tait free throws tied the game yet again, this time at 59.

After Washington College went in front by a deuce, Grabiak calmly sank a pair at the foul line to knot the score at 61.

O'Donnell answered with a jumper to make it 63-61 with 1:26 remaining, but CUA still had plenty of time.  The Cardinals were unable to score for the remainder of the game though, missing their final two shots as their nine-game win streak came to an end.

Woerner led CUA with 18 points on 7 of 14 shooting, while McEvily netted 8 points and pulled down 4 boards.  Josephsen led the Cardinals with nine caroms and Grabiak dished out a team-leading four assists.

Pledger finished with 15 points and 8 boards, while O'Donnell (16), Erin Kile (11) and Tait (10) joined her in double figures.

The opening few minutes of the game were very close, with five ties.  CUA was eventually able to open up an eight-point lead following a McEvily layup with 12:47 to go before halftime.

Janicki's free throw at the 10:01 mark again gave CUA an eight-point lead, and that wound up being the final point for either team for the next four minutes until Jenny McGann got loose on a fastbreak and upped the Cardinals lead to 10.

Woerner's basket with just under a minute to play pushed CUA's lead to 34-27, but Erin Fitzgerald sank a free throw with 25 ticks remaining to set the halftime margin at six.

In Saturday's consolation game, St. John Fisher staged a dramatic late game rally to stun Thiel 71-69.  Meghan Soja netted 17 points in the win for St. John Fisher, while Kelly Muffley hit for 19 for Thiel.

Following the day's action, Muffley, Camaryn Buckner (St. John Fisher), McEvily, Woerner and Kile were named to the All-Tournament Team with Pledger taking home MVP honors.
