Senior Dani Hoover scored a game-high 15 points all in the second half as the No. 10 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team earned a 47-37 win over Wartburg College in the Warburg Holiday Tournament championship game on Friday afternoon.

Hoover, who was named the tournament's most valuable player, scored 13 of her 15 points in the final nine minutes of the game. Junior Annie Sayers was also selected to the all-tournament team for the Bears, after finishing with eight points and seven rebounds in the championship game. Joining Hoover and Sayers on the all-tournament team were University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh's Megan Wenig, Westminster College's Rachel Backes, and Wartburg's Abi Weidemann and Stephanie Reiter.

After being tied 13-13 at halftime, Washington U. opened the second half with an 8-0 run, including four points by Sayers, to take a 21-13 lead with 14:24 left in the game. Wartburg battled back to within five at 25-20 with 11:05 remaining, but a pair of free throws by freshman Alyssa Johanson and a basket by sophomore Jenna Sackman gave the Bears a 29-20 lead. Washington U. went on an 11-4 run, including nine points by Hoover, to open up its largest lead of the game, 40-26, with 4:54 left. The Knights cut the lead to seven with 16.4 seconds left, but Washington U. sealed the 47-37 win with a pair of free throws by Hoover and another free throw by freshman Melissa Gilkey.

Washington U. shot 30.8 percent (16-of-52) from the field in the game, including 46.7 percent in the second half. The Bears were just 2-of-19 from three-point range, but finished 13-of-14 from the free-throw line. Warburg shot 21.8 percent (12-of-55) from the field, and was just 1-of-16 from three-point range. The Knights finished 12-of-18 from the free-throw line. Washington U. finished with a 44-39 advantage on the rebounding glass.

Hoover and Sayers led the Bears with 15 and eight points, respectively. Gilkey had a team-high 10 rebounds to go with her five points, and senior Claire Schaeperkoetter also added five points.

Washington U. improved to 10-1 on the season as the Bears finished their non-conference schedule. Wartburg dropped to 9-2. The Bears will open University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Jan. 7 when they host No. 2-ranked University of Chicago in a 1 p.m. game at the WU Field House in St. Louis.
