Falcons Lose First Game of Season

The Falcon women's basketball team experienced a first on Thursday - a loss - as Carthage beat UWRF, 75-68 in overtime, at the D3Hoops.com Classic in Las Vages, Nev.

The loss was the first of the season for the Falcons who are now 11-1 overall.

"Carthage outplayed us today," said Falcon Coach Cindy Holbrook after the game. "They beat us on both ends of the floor. We need to respond better when a team gets ahead of us."

Carthage held a 31-30 lead at the half. UWRF jumped out to a 9-2 lead with just 3:30 played in the contest. But CC went on a 10-3 run to take a 14-12 lead with 11:34 to play. The Falcons led just once after that. With 7:10 to play Jamie Kenealy (Farmington, MN, Farmington) made a layup to give the Falcons a 21-10 lead. But then Carthage went on a 7-0 run to take command.

Halfway through the second half the game was tied, 45-45. Carthage then went on another big run, 10 points, to take a 55-45 lead with 7:27 to go. But the Falcons battled back to take a 59-57 lead with 3:11 to play. Trailing by two, 63-61 with 34 seconds to play, Tiffany Gregorich (Altoona, WI, Altoona) hit two free throws to tie the game at 63 and send the game into overtime.

In the extra sesssion the Falcons never had the lead as CC scored the first five points to take a 68-63 lead with 1:30 to play. Tiffany Gregorich hit a three to get the Falcons to within two, 68-66 with 1:21 to go, but that's as close as the Falcons could get.

Tiffany Gregorich led the Falcons with 22 points. She was a perfect 9-9 at the line. Carolyn Derksen (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove) scored a career-high 14 points and she led the Falcons with a career-high 13 rebounds. Brittany Gregorich (Altoona, WI, Altoona) added 12 points and she had three assists. Kenealy scored a career-high 10 points, eight rebounds and six steals. The six steals was the most by any player in the game. 

Diana Jacklin led Carthage, now 9-2, with 21 points and she had 10 rebounds.She also led all players with six blocked shots. Cailee Corcoran scored 19 points and she led her team with 12 rebounds.

The Falcons return to WIAC action on Wednesday when they host No. 7 ranked UW-Stevens Point at the Karges Center. Action starts at 6 p.m.
