UW-Whitewater Knocks Concordia (Texas) From Unbeaten Ranks

More news about: UW-Whitewater

Junior center Steff Glynn blocked what could have been the game tying shot with seven seconds left, rebounded a missed free throw on the defensive end with four seconds left, and hit a pair of free throws with two seconds left to seal a 64-61 win for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater over previously unbeaten Concordia University (TX) Thursday night in Austin, Texas.

Concordia led 4-3 when Whitewater went on a 6-0 run, holding the Tornados scoreless for three minutes, to take a 9-4 lead.  Concordia came back to tie the game at 9-9 and 11-11.  With the score 15-13 Whitewater, the Warhawks put together a 9-0 spurt that gave them a 24-13 lead with 4:49 left in the first half.  UW-W led 33-21 at the half.

The Warhawks held Concordia to 22% shooting from the floor in the first twenty minutes, and UW-W was helped by a five point advantage at free throw line, hitting 9-11 while Concordia went 4-6.

Whitewater led 39-25, holding the Tornados scoreless for 4:39 and it looked like it was time to engage the cruise control.  But Concordia made it an entirely different game with a 14-3 streak that closed Whitewater's lead to 42-39 on a three point play by sophomore forward Tremeka Canada with 10:42 on the clock.  Whitewater never lost the lead the rest of the way, but the margin was never more than four points.

Senior forward Christen McLee made a three point play at 8:52, cutting Whitewater's lead to two, 46-44.  With just 1:50 on the clock senior forward Lashanda Luckey's three point play cut Whitewater's lead even slimmer, to 56-55.  Sophomore guard Kaitlyn Thill provided the response for UW-W, hitting a free throw with 1:30 left for a 57-55 lead, stealing the ball from Luckey at 1:15, and adding two more free throw points when she was fouled by Luckey to put the Warhawks in front 59-55.

Luckey grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled, and made both free throws, to make it 59-57 with 0:45 left.  Just five seconds later her layup tied the game at 59-59.  Whitewater's Cortney Kumerow, a junior center, made both ends of a one and one for a 61-59 lead with 0:30 remaining.  Concordia senior forward Shamika Singleton made the first of two free throws to slice the Whitewater lead back to 61-60 with 0:21, but UW-W sophomore guard Mary Merg hit one of two charity tosses on the other end to bump the UW-W lead to 62-60 with 0:15 left.  Luckey, again, got off a shot inside that was blocked by Glynn, then went back up with the rejection and was fouled.  She made one of the two free throws with :04 left, Glynn pulled down the board, and Whitewater was still in front 62-61.  Glynn was fouled immediately, then hit both of her free throws for the final margin.

Whitewater shot 44% from the field, Concordia 34%, and the Warhawks hit 3-10 three's and the Tornados 1-7.  The teams combined for 54 free throws (19-25 UW-W, 20-29 CU) and 57 turnovers.

Sophomore guard Katie Burton led UW-W with 15 points, hitting 7-11 from the field while totaling her season high.  Senior forward Chantel Burg added 11 points and team best four steals, and Merg contributed ten points and a team high nine rebounds.  Luckey led all scorers with 17 points and added game rebounding honors with ten.  Singleton was also in double figures with 14 points.

UW-W, 7-4, will play East Texas Baptist University Friday in Austin.  The Warhawks' next home game will be January 7 at 4:00, with UW-River Falls visiting Kachel Gym in Williams Center for the Treyton Kilar Kids' Day game.
