Defense Aids Regals to Victory Over Bearcats

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - A string of four three-pointers during a five minute stretch in the first half paved the way for a convincing 62-46 home win for Cal Lutheran women's basketball over Willamette on Sunday afternoon.

As a team Cal Lutheran had made only 1-of-7 shots from beyond the arc to open the game. Leading by five with seven minutes left in the first half, the Regals drained its next three attempts from downtown courtesy of Chelsey Hastigan, Alex Nelson and Jazmyne Porter.

Porter came off the bench and made an immediate impact with back-to-back baskets that cemented a Cal Lutheran lead for the final 35 minutes of regulation. She finished with nine points and a game-high five steals in the victory. 

Meaghan Goodenough made it 4-of-5 from beyond the arc as a team to close out the period. Following baskets from Channing Fleischmann and Cameron Jones the Regals extended their lead to 20 points at intermission.

While the Regals offense surged the Bearcats struggled against the Cal Lutheran defense which put on its stingiest first half performance this season. Willamette was held to just 16 points while shooting 6-for-32 from the floor and 0-for-11 from three.

The Bearcats scored eight unanswered points closing the gap to 11 points with 13:36 left in regulation. The Regals responded with a 7-0 scoring run of their own and led by double figures the entire second half.

Jones led all players with 13 points and 13 rebounds posting the first collegiate double-double of her career. Flesichmann finished with 12 points and 12 boards for her third double-double in seven games this season.

Jojo DeLong led the Bearcats with 10 points. Kaileigh Westermann and Katelyn Nordlien combined for nine points and 21 rebounds in the loss.

Cal Lutheran (3-4) will host Puget Sound on Monday, Dec. 19 at 5 p.m.
