Kohawks beat Bethany Lutheran, Peterson breaks Coe career wins record

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - After a rocky start shooting, Coe turned it on midway through the first half, as they beat Bethany Lutheran 84-38 Monday at Eby Fieldhouse.  The win was the 92nd at Coe for Randi Peterson, the most in school history.

Bethany Lutheran led 10-8 with 13:14 to play, but Coe used a 24-2 run over the next six minutes, including scoring 15 straight points, to open the game up.  The Vikings only points during the run came on a jumper in the paint by Anna Cepek with 10:24 to play in the opening half.  Bethany Lutheran would only get one more field goal in the first half, with that coming on a layup by Amanda Edmision with :29 to play in the half.

Coe opened the second half on fire as well, going on a 25-4 run in the first 10:49 of the half.  The only two baskets for the Vikings came from Jessica Englund with 14:29 and 10:37 to play.  Englund scored the Vikings first 13 points of the second half, as she played a game-high 38 minutes.  With 3:55 to play, a pair of free throws by freshman Jordan Olerud (Spring Grove, Minn./Spring Grove) were the start of six-straight points for the Kohawks, as they extended their lead to 83-33, the largest of the game, with 2:32 to play.

All 17 players that suited up for the Kohawks saw at least three minutes of action in the game.  Of the 17 that played, 14 scored.  Sophomore Mackenzie Reed (Iowa City, Iowa/West) scored a career-high 16 points to lead Coe.  Kayla Waskow (Dunkerton, Iowa/Dunkerton), Leslie Ware (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston) and Emma Ambrose (Davenport, Iowa/Assumption) joined Reed in double figures.  Waskow had 12, Ware had 10 and Ambrose added a career-high 11 points.  Juniors Lindsey Buckles (Davenport, Iowa/West) and Caitlin Kray (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) added seven points off the bench, with it being a career-high for both.

Freshman Megan Hayes (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) led Coe with eight rebounds.  Kray added five boards, while Reed and Ware had four apiece.  Ware also had a game-high seven assists, with Waskow adding four.  Hayes and Kray each had two blocks, a career-high for Kray.

Coe finished with a school record 23 steals, with five players setting career-highs of two or more.  Buckles and Kray led Coe with a career-high four and three respectively.  K. Waskow, Hayes, Ware, Lindsey Jipp (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) and Sarah Waskow (Dunkerton, Iowa/Dunkerton)  each had two steals.  It was a career-high for Hayes, L. Jipp and S. Waskow.

The Kohawks dominated the specialty stats, as they outscored the Vikings in the paint 46-14.  Coe also had an advantage in points off turnovers (35-6), fast break points (20-0) and bench points (54-5).

Coe (5-2, 2-0 IIAC) will return to Iowa Conference play on Wednesday night, as they travel to Central (3-3, 0-2 IIAC).  Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Pella.
