In what had been a back and forth game, the Centre women's basketball team outscored Rhodes 11-1 over the final three minutes to come away with a 62-57 win in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest Sunday in Memphis, Tenn.

The game stayed close throughout, with 14 lead changes, 11 ties and neither team gaining a lead of more than six points. Rhodes tied its biggest lead of the afternoon at 56-51 with three minutes to play, but it was the Colonels who would control the game from that point on.

Centre's run began when Paige Baechle (Gallatin, Tenn.), who led the team with 14 points, hit a jumper with 2:30 remaining to cut the margin to 56-53. A free throw by Lauren Huter (Louisville, Ky.) pulled the Colonels closer before a 3-pointer by Bridget Winstead (Franklin, Tenn.) gave Centre a 57-56 lead at the 1:00 mark.

Sharwil Bell of Rhodes tied the game with a free throw with 43 seconds to play, but it was the last point the Lynx would score. Two free throws each by Huter and Winstead with another by Maggie Hartlage (Louisville, Ky.) allowed Centre to close out the game at 62-57.

The game had gone back and forth since Centre opened with the first five points. Rhodes fought back to take the lead, only to see the Colonels respond with an 8-0 run to take their biggest lead at 22-16. Shortly after, Rhodes answered with a 14-4 surge of its own and took a 30-28 lead to halftime. The teams traded baskets through much of the second half before Rhodes pulled ahead at 54-49 after a 9-2 run.

Chelsea Benham (Taswell, Ind.) followed Baechle in the scoring column for Centre with 12 points while Maggie Prewitt (Mount Sterling, Ky.) added 10 and Winstead nine. Prewitt led the Colonels with six rebounds while Baechle and Huter each had five. Sarah Johnson of Rhodes tied Baechle for game scoring honors with 14 points while Bell added 13.

Both teams shot 36 percent for the game with Centre going 19-of-53 and Rhodes shooting 21-of-58. Rhodes was 7-of-21 from 3-point range to Centre's 3-of-12. The Colonels outrebounded Rhodes 36-29 and held a big edge at the free throw line, going 21-of-27 (78 percent) to 8-of-17 (47 percent) for the Lynx.

With the win, Centre moves to 5-1 overall on the season and remains perfect in SCAC play at 2-0. Rhodes falls to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference. After a week off, the Colonels return to action Dec. 13 at Mount St. Joseph.
