Spartan Women Downed in Exhibition Contest at Division I Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team lost an exhibition contest at Division I Cleveland State University, 85-42, in the Spartans' final tune-up for the 2011-12 season on Monday evening at the Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Center.

The Spartans officially open the season next Tuesday, November 15 at Washington & Jefferson College at 7:00 p.m. in Washington, Pennsylvania.

Case hung tough with the Vikings for most of the contest, getting as close as four when senior forward Erin Hollinger (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) hit a fast-break jumper to make the score 11-7 at the 14:25 mark of the first half.  

Hollinger, a D3Hoops.com Preseason All-American, led the way with a team-best 18 points to go along with five rebounds.

Junior point guard Erica Iafelice (North Canton, Ohio/Canton Hoover) grabbed a game-high tying seven rebounds, while fellow junior guard Evy Iacono (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) dished out three assists.

Shalonda Winton led the Vikings with a game-high 23 points while pulling down seven boards and recording six steals.

Case is on the road for the first five contests of the season before opening its home slate with the annual University Athletic Association/North Coast Athletic Conference Challenge on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 26-27 at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
