Rochester Rolls Into Wendy's Semifinals With 75-33 Win

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - Two big scoring runs - one in each half- sparked the University of Rochester to a 75-33 victory over The College at Brockport in the quarterfinals of the Wendy's College Classic.

Rochester will play William Smith in the semifinals on Thursday evening. William Smith defeated host Nazareth, 60-55, in another quarterfinal. The semis will be held at RIT with the Rochester game starting at 6 pm. Roberts Wesleyan plays RIT in the other semifinal. The third place game (1 pm) and championship game (5:30 pm) will be played at RIT on Saturday.

The Yellowjackets relied on their inside strength. Madeline Korber scored 14 points and collected seven rebounds in 19 minutes. Jodie Luther had 10 points and six rebounds. Loren Wagner scored 10 points and grabbed eight boards while Amy Woods had eight points and grabbed five rebounds.

Rochester shot a collective 51.6% from the floor, 56.3% in the first half in building a 37-19 lead. The Yellowjackets held a 48-23 advantage on the boards, 32-7 off Brockport's end of the court and 16-16 on the Rochester half of the floor.

Brockport did not have a double figure scorer. Phoebe Byrnes scored seven points. LaDonya Rolle and Cecilia Sigrist scored six points apiece. The Golden Eagles shot 24.5% from the floor for the game.

Korber made a layup to ignite a 20-2 run over nine minutes in the first half that pushed Rochester from a 10-9 lead to 30-11. Six players scored in the burst.

In the second half, Laney Ming stole the ball for a layup and added a free throw two minutes into the period. That engineered a 17-2 spurt over the next four and a half minutes. Luther closed the run with a layuyp for a 54-24 edge with 13:41 left in the game.
