Maroons Survive Scare from Lake Forest

CHICAGO -- Joann Torres buried the go-ahead 3-pointer with just under two minutes left in the game as the second-ranked University of Chicago women's basketball team avoided an upset with a 61-59 win over Lake Forest College Tuesday night at the Ratner Athletics Center.

Game Summary

Chicago (3-0) fell behind 17-16 at the 11:34 mark of the first half, but the Maroons then went on an 8-0 run to go up 24-17. Chicago led 39-25 at the break.

The Maroons led by as many as 16 points in the second half (45-29 at the 16:58 mark), but the Foresters (1-2) rallied to take a 54-53 lead on a Rose Coll basket with 5:24 to go.

Torres' 3-point shot -- her third of the game -- broke a 56-56 deadlock with 1:52 remaining. Lake Forest had a chance to win in the closing seconds, but a 3-point attempt fell off the rim as time expired.

Statistical Highlights

Morgan Herrick paced the Maroons with 17 points, while Meghan Herrick finished with 11.

Lake Forest's Sam Schuring led all scorers with 23 points. Gina Ambrose (13) and Coll (12) also tallied double digits.

Taylor Simpson grabbed 16 rebounds, while Bryanne Halfhill dished out six assists.

Notes

Chicago extended its regular season winning streak to 21 games and won its 14th in a row at the Ratner Center.

The Maroons won for the 35th consecutive time when leading at halftime.
