UMF falls to 1-3 as Colby conquers Beavers

FARMINGTON -- Four players reached double-digit scoring as nationally-ranked Colby College copped an 80-37 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington in non-conference women's basketball action tonight at Dearborn Gymnasium.

The Mules (3-0), ranked 16th in the d3hoops.com preseason poll, are scheduled to host Thomas College Monday at 7 p.m. The Beavers (1-3) are tabbed to take on Bates College on Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.

Rachael Mack (Augusta, Maine) led all scorers with 16 points for the Mules, while Jil Vaughan (Wareham, Mass.) pitched in 13 points and eight rebounds and Jen Nale and Kelly Potvin each added 10 points.

Colby made 49.2 percent (29-59) of its shots from the field, including 55 percent (11-20) from 3-point range, and had assists for 26 of those baskets. Aarika Ritchie (Lee, Maine) made seven assists in the victory.

Emily Higgins (Saco, Maine) and Lindsay Ranquist (Owls Head, Maine) each scored eight points for the Beavers, who shot 33.3 percent (15-45) from the floor.

UMF hung around with the Mules for the first five minutes as Kelsey Graffam (Falmouth, Maine) opened the scoring with a runner. Higgins hit a basket to cut the Colby lead to 12-8 five minutes into the game, but Colby ran off the next 14 points to build a 26-8 command with 10:04 left in the half.

The Mule lead ballooned to 33-12 before Emma Morrison (Saco, Maine) and Ranquist nailed threes to ignite a 10-0 run to make it 33-22 with 1:41 remaining. Colby scored the half's final five points for a 38-22 advantage at the break.

Colby led 54-32 with 11 minutes left in the game before unleashing a 15-0 run to finish off the Beavers. Jayde Bennett (Lynn, Mass.), Diana Manduca (Portland, Maine) and Ritchie each hit a 3-pointer during the stretch as the Mules rolled to the 80-37 win.
