Madden scores 14 in Union's 59-49 season opening loss to Hartwick

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Shayla Madden scored a game high 14 points and Brittney Kenney added 11 but the Union women's basketball team lost the season opener to Hartwick, 59-49 at the Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night. The Hawks improved to 2-2 on the young season.

Maria Foglia led Hartwick with 11 points and four assists while Josefine Vincents added 10 points. Carlee Hirt had a team high six rebounds.

Kenney was a perfect seven for seven in free throws and also had seven rebounds while Madeline Granato scored nine points and Marissa Peck added seven. Union had a slight 34-31 rebounding advantage for the night.

The Hawks shot 46% for the game, including 52% in the second half, while the Dutchwomen shot 33% for the contest.

Hartwick took a 28-14 lead into the halftime. The Hawks got up by as many as 17 on a layup by Hirt with 13:51 remaining in the second half for a 33-16 lead. But the Dutchwomen came back with a 11-4 run to pull to within 10 at 37-27, including Madeline Granato's two straight three pointers. But the Hawks came back with a run of their own. They took a 54-31 lead with 5:40 left, with a run of 17-4 in a span of 6:07. Three different players hit three pointers in the run. Union got as close as 10 with an Erdman layup with six seconds left to provide the eventual 59-49 final.

Union is back in action this weekend at the Woodcliffe Hotel & Spa Inviational hosted by St. John Fisher. The Dutchwomen face Pitt Bradford on November 26 at 4 p.m. and host Fisher on November 27 at 1 p.m.
