Lyndsey Smith Joins 1,000-Point Club As Comets Down Austin College, 69-37

RICHARDSON, TX (11.22.11) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team scored 47 points in the second to nearly double up Austin College, 69-37, Tuesday night.

Senior Lyndsey Smith scored a game-high 14 points and in the process became just the second Comet women's player to reach the 1,000-point mark in a career, now with 1,000 points exactly just three games into her final season. Smith joins former UTD standout Chelsea Edwards as the only 1,000-point scorers in program history. Edwards finished her career with a school-record 1,314 points.

Leading just 22-18 at the break, the Comets (now 3-0) shot 48.5 percent from the field in the second half, hitting 16-of-33 shots as a team. UTD opened the half on an 11-0 run, capped by a fast break layup by Kaitlyn Korioth to give the Comets a 33-18 cushion with 17:48 remaining.

After giving up a pair of free throws by the Lady Roos, UTD rolled off a 10-0 run over the next three minutes. With 14:14 left, Kellie Loukanis pushed the Comet lead to 43-20 with a three-pointer after a pass from Nikki Kosary. The Comets took their first 30-point at the 6:31 mark on a layup by Loukanis and would extend their lead to as many as 34 points before setting for the 32-point win.

Smith hit 5-of-16 shots from the field, making 2-of-5 three-pointers, and hit both free throw attempts. She added five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Korioth joined Smith in double digits as she ended the night with 10 points and a team-best seven rebounds. Loukanis and Kosary each added nine points. UTD continue to shine defensive, collecting nine blocked shots. Brittany Houston led the Comets with four rejections.

The Comets shot 37.1 percent (23-of-62) from the field and hit 6-of-16 shots (37.5%) from behind the arc on the night. UTD hit 17-of-25 free throws (68%). The Comets held a slight advantage in rebounding, 41-39.

For AC (now 0-4), Brooke Melton had 11 points while Christina Kime added 10 points. Melton also led the Lady Roos with 12 rebounds. The visitors shot just 22.7 percent (10-of-44) from the floor, making just 3-of-14 shots (21.4%) from three-point range, and shot 66.7 percent (14-of-21) from the foul line.

UTD makes its first road trip of the season this weekend with a pair of American Southwest Conference crossover games. The Comets open the holiday weekend at 1 p.m. Saturday at Howard Payne. UTD then visits Sul Ross State 4:30 p.m. Monday.
