PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – After dropping their season opener, the Edgewood College women's basketball team tried to rebound against Loras College. The Eagles nearly erased a 16 point deficit, but could not complete the comeback, falling 47-42 in the final game at the UW-Platteville Tipoff Tournament.

Loras (3-0) jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first half before the Eagles started to come back. Chelsey Watkins and Mariah Hill each went 2-for-2 from the free throw line and Dareon Henderson put Edgewood College (0-2) ahead 8-7 with a layup. However, the Duhawks answered with a 6-0 run of their own to take a 13-8 lead.

The Duhawks extended their lead to 19-13 before Hill brought the Eagles back again. The freshman drilled a three-point basket and made a layup to bring the Eagles within a point with 4:12 left in the half. However that was the last Eagle bucket of the first half as Loras closed the stanza on a 5-0 run to take a 24-18 lead into the locker room.

The Loras lead grew to as many as 16 points with 6:38 in the second before the Eagles made another run to get back into the contest. A Watkins layup, followed by an Alison Tobin jumper and Melissa Wellnitz free throw cut the deficit to 11 with 3:47 left. Allison Novitske drained a three point basket and Tobin converted an old fashioned three-point play to cap an 11-0 run that made the score 41-36 Loras.

Brit Kent ended the 11-0 run with a layup to put Loras up 43-36. After a Watkins free throw, Tobin sunk a three-point shot from the top of the key to bring the Eagles within one possession with 49 seconds left. However, the Duhawks sealed the 47-42 victory by making four of their final six free throw attempts.

Hill led all scorers with 17 points while Tobin chipped in with 10 points. Novitske and Watkins scored five points apiece, and Melanie Walker grabbed a game and career-high 11 rebounds. Loras shot 30.8 percent (16-52) from the floor while the Eagles shot 21.5 percent (14-65).

Edgewood College will open Northern Athletics Conference play on Saturday when they travel to Concordia University Wisconsin. Tipoff from Mequon is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
