Box Score

The Yellowjacket women's basketball team broke the 80-point mark for the second consecutive game and is off to a 2-0 start following an 83-67 win over Dominican University in the first game of the Baylake Bank Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by St. Norbert College.  The Yellowjackets, with the win will play for the tournament championship on Saturday, November 19 at 3:00 p.m.

The story of the game was the strong second half shooting by the Yellowjackets, who shot a respectable 41.2% in the first half.  Following the break, however, they heated up, hitting at a 51.4% clip.

It was a back-and-forth first half, one that saw the Yellowjackets build a seven-point lead three different times, all of them a result of points from senior Bri Davis (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown).  The Yellowjackets were up 23-16 with 7:27 to play in the first half, and in over a minute the lead disappeared.  Ashley Oliver and Sarah Budz combined to score six points in 62 seconds to give Domincan a 25-23 lead.  Domincan then took off, building its lead as big as four, but was never able to pull away.  The Yellowjackets eventually regained the lead at 37-36 with 32 seconds left in the half on a pair of free throws by Deandra Vavra (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti), but Katie Budz hit a three-pointer with four seconds left and the Yellowjackets trailed by a pair, 39-37 at the break.

In the second half, as the Yellowjackets heated up, Domincan cooled off, shooting at just 37.5% after the break.  The score was still tied five minutes in before Dominican, on a Katie Budz three-pointer, again pulled away and was up by five.  The Yellowjackets reeled them back in, however, and blew the game open.  Vavra hit a jumper with 9:51 to play to make it 57-56, and the Yellowjackets never trailed again.  Down the stretch the Yellowjackets went on an 11-2 run to lead 66-58.  The Yellowjackets would close the game on a 28-11 run, powered by 17 points combined between Vavra and Connie Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) and cruised to the 17-point win.

Urmanski led all scorers with 23 points, and also pulled down five rebounds and added four assists.  Davis dropped in 19 points and Vavra was right behind her with 16.  Vavra also had a team-high eight rebounds.  Urmanski, Kailee McDonald (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) and Hillary Peterson (Moose Lake, Minn./Moose Lake) each had one block.  Vavra had a team-best three steals.

Sarah Budz led Dominican, posting a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
