Lady Mavs Advance to AMCC Finals in a Thriller

More news about: Medaille

(Pittsburgh, PA) – The Medaille College women's basketball team's quest for a second straight AMCC championship and fifth NCAA Tournament bid in the past six years remains a possibility as they rallied and then hung on for a (60-59) win over Penn State-Behrend in the AMCC semifinal's this evening at La Roche College.

This was a game that saw eleven ties and fourteen lead changes, but the Lady Mavs survived a pair of missed free throws by the Lions with four seconds remaining to hang on for the victory.

The Lady Mav seniors played a crucial role in the victory, but no one played a more critical role than Amanda Sahhar (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) who led her team with (17 ) points, (11) rebounds, and (4) blocks.  None of her shots were bigger than the jumper she knocked down with (00:20) remaining on the clock, that proved to be the deciding bucket in the game.

Fellow senior Kacie Mills (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore East) directed the Medaille offense as she finished with three assists, to go along with ten points and five boards.  Forward Mame Yaa Ankome-Mensa (Brampton, ONT/D'youville) grabbed six boards, including one off the offensive glass that led to the game winning bucket.

Freshman Bianca Smiley (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) continued to shine as she had  a (13) point, (8) rebound, (4) block), and (2) assist day en route to the huge victory.

The Lady Mavs improve to (22-3) on the year and they will face host La Roche College tomorrow (2/26) at 3:00pm in the AMCC title game with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
