CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Lauren Hannmann's game-high 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting helped power WPI to a 56-32 win over MIT in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball game on Wednesday night. Rachel Hunt paced MIT (8-15, 4-13 NEWMAC) with 12 points while grabbing six rebounds.

After trading baskets to start the contest, back-to-back layups from Hannmann sparked a 20-4 run which resulted in a 22-8 advantage with 5:17 remaining in the frame. MIT registered seven unanswered points to cut its deficit in half, but a basket by Cindy Chelius raised WPI's margin to 24-15 at halftime.

MIT narrowed the gap to six (25-19) early in the second stanza, but this was as close as it would get as a pair of Callie King three-pointers keyed a 10-4 spurt which returned WPI's lead to double-digits at the 14:16 mark. The visitors maintained their offensive rhythm during the remainder of the game with their largest lead coming at the final buzzer.

Tamara Pena tallied six points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals while Anna Merrifield contributed six points and six rebounds for MIT. Stephanie Cooke hauled in a team-high seven boards to go along with two steals while Lauren Sascha Burton notched a trio of assists and steals.

Siena Mamayek and Cindy Chelius both posted eight points coming off of the WPI bench. Melissa Kuhn compiled eight rebounds, five assists, four steals, and two blocks as Elle Fontaine registered six points, five boards, and two steals.

Both squads conclude regular-season play on Saturday, Feb. 19. MIT will host Smith College while WPI (17-6, 13-4 NEWMAC) will make the trip to Wheaton College.
