More news about: St. Thomas

Freshman Taylor Young finished with 19 points and seven rebounds to lead the Tommie women's basketball team to Saturday's 65-58 victory at Gustavus.

The win and St. Benedict's loss at Concordia-Moorhead let St. Thomas clinch a no worse than a share of the MIAC title with two games to  play. It marks UST's second women's hoops conference title in the last four seasons and 10th in the last 21 seasons.

St. Thomas can secure an outright chammpionship with a win Wednesday at Hamline or next Saturday vs. St. Ben's. One Tommie win or one Cobber or Blazer loss will ock up a first-round playoff bye for UST.

Rachel Booth added 14 points, eight rebounds and four blocks and Sarah Smith added 14 points and seven boards for the Tommies (18-5 overall, 17-3 MIAC), who have won seven in a row, all over an 18-day span.

The Toms helped limit the Gusties to 30% shooting from the field and swept the regular-season series over the Gusties for the first time since 2000-2001.

The Gusties pulled within 51-48 with 4:30 left. But Jazmin Townsend's 3-point basket and 6-of-6 free throw shooting by Carolyn Dienhart down the stretch helped hold off Gustavus.
