The Carthage College women's basketball team (16-7, 7-5 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) was upset by CCIW-opponent North Central College (8-14, 4-7 CCIW), 89-75, on Saturday, Feb. 12 at Merner Fieldhouse/Gregory Arena in Naperville, Ill.  With third-place Millikin University losing at home, 65-64, to last-place Augustana College (Ill.), Carthage missed an opportunity to move up in the conference standings.  The Lady Reds remain in fourth place, trailing first-place Illinois Wesleyan University, second-place Wheaton College (Ill.) and third-place Millikin.

Carthage fell behind, 18-10, at 13:36 first half, due, in part, to a three three-pointers by North Central's Jackie Errico.  The Lady Reds cut the lead to three, 22-19, at 9:46.  With the Cardinals still leading by three, 24-21, at 8:20, North Central used a 9-2 run to take a 12-point lead, 35-23, at 4:44.  The Cardinals extended their lead to 17 points, 45-28,with 49 seconds to play in the half on an off-balance, desperation trey by Christine Karl as the time clock expired.  Since everything else was dropping for the Cardinals, who shot an incredible 73 percent (19-26) in the period, Yessenia Cabadas hit a short jumper with 6.6 seconds left to make it a 19-point game at the break, 47-28.

Another three-pointer by Errico, her fourth, at the start of the second half gave North Central a 22-point lead, 50-28.  A three by Karl at 18:09 made it a 23-point game, 53-30.  A pair of three-point plays by Diana Jacklin helped bring the Lady Reds to within 11 points, 58-47, at 13:01, but back-to-back threes by Errico, her fifth, and Jenny Swanson upped the North Central margin to 17 points, 64-47, at 12:00.  The Cardinals went on to win by 14 points, 89-75.

North Central shot 62 percent (31-50), including 12-of-20 from three-point range.  The Cardinals, who entered the game with just a .288 team three-point field-goal percentage, broke a Carthage opponents' record of 10 three-pointers originally set by Illinois Wesleyan University in 2006 and subsequently matched by three other teams.  Carthage shot 43 percent (29-67), including eight-of-25 three-pointers, and the Lady Reds had a narrow, 31-28 rebounding edge.  The Cardinals also hit a perfect 15-of-15 from the free-throw line.

Four North Central players scored in double figures.  Jackie Errico tallied a game-high 29 points on eight-of-10 field goals, including six-of-seven three-pointers, along with a perfect seven-of-seven free throws and nine rebounds.  Jenny Swanson and Christine Karl scored 17 points each, Swanson on six-of-seven shooting and four-of-five from three-point range.  Helen Muleya came off the bench to add 14 points and five assists.

Diana Jacklin (Jr., Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) topped Carthage with 20 points on eight-of-10 field goals, along with four-of-four from the free-throw line and seven rebounds.  Cailee Corcoran (So., Oak Lawn, Ill./Chicago-Marist) had 17 points and a game-high 12 boards, and Heather Gilmore (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa/Pleasant Hill-Southeast) chipped in 11 points.

Carthage travels to Chicago on Tuesday, Feb. 15 to play CCIW-opponent North Park University (9-14, 3-9 CCIW) in a 7:30 p.m. game at the North Park Gym.
