Miller, Owens Lead Wesley

More news about: Wesley

FROSTBURG, Md. - Wesley College got huge games from Jazmine Miller (Dover, Del./Dover) and Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) as the Wolverines picked up their fourth straight win with a 58-55 win at Frostburg State.

Miller scored a game-high 20 points and added eight rebounds and seven steals in the ballgame.  Owens turned in her second straight double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds.  The senior also blocked three shots.

Even with the efforts of Miller and Owens, The Bobcats (11-11, 8-5 CAC) nearly erased a 15-point deficit in the final three minutes.  A lay up by Cory Boyd (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) had given Wesley (11-10, 6-6 CAC) its biggest lead of the game, 54-39.

Frostburg State began to chip away at the lead, however.  The Bobcats had already cut it to 10, when Lisa Byer hit three straight threes.  The final one came with five seconds left and made it 57-53.  Elaina Hummel then stole the ball and a layup by Elizabeth Carrington made it a two point game with just three seconds left.

Miller was fouled but made only the second free throw.  But the Wolverines forced a desperation shot off a full court pass to survive with the win.

Wesley had led at the break 29-21 behind 13 points from Miller.  The Bobcats had led for much of the early going before a three by Boyd tied the score at 19-19 as part of a 10-2 run to close the period.  The Wolverines held Frostburg State scoreless for seven minutes during the run as the Bobcats turned the ball over on five consecutive possessions, then missed eight shots in a row.

Allison Beddia (New Castle, Del./Delcastle) overcame a poor shooting night with eight rebounds and four steals.  Boyd had nine points, five assists and a pair of blocks.  Heather Fuller (Greenwood, Del./Sussex Tech) matched her season-high with six points.

Hummel paced Frostburg State with 17 points in the loss.  Mindy Sharp hit 6-of-9 field goals to finish with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Wesley shot just 36 percent in the game, but turned 18 offensive rebounds into 14 second chance points as the Wolverines outrebounded the Bobcats 46-37.

The win moved Wesley into fifth place in the Capital Athletic Conference standings as both St. Mary's (Md.) and Salisbury lost.  The Seahawks had entered the day in fifth place, but fell to 6-7, while the Sea Gulls, tied with Wesley at the start of the day, dropped to 5-7 in the conference.

Wesley will look to stay in the win column on Marymount (Va.) visits Wentworth Gymnasium on February 9.
