Rewa's layup lifts Albion over Alma

ALMA, Mich. – Albion College completed a winning week with a 56-55 victory over Alma College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action. By winning all three of its games this week, Albion pushed its overall record to 11-10 and maintained third place in the MIAA standings with a 9-3 mark against league rivals.

Patty Rewa scored 11 points in the first 9:13 as Albion sprinted out to a 17-4 lead. Rewa's early production included two layups, a jumper, and five free throws.

Albion still held a double-digit lead, 23-12, as Melissa Shaw completed an old-fashioned three-point play with 5:46 left in the first half.

Albion missed its last six shots of the half and it turned the ball over three times as Alma went on a 13-1 run to hold a 25-24 lead at halftime. Sydney Beckwith led Alma's charge with a jumper and four free throws while Danielle Hicks produced a couple of layups.

The teams traded the lead nine times in the second half. Anna Mattson knocked down two free throws as Alma held a 39-34 lead midway through the period, and Albion came back to hold a 49-43 lead on Shaw's fastbreak layup with 5:18 left.

Rewa provided the winning basket with a layup with two seconds left. She finished with 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field and 6-of-7 shooting from the line. She also grabbed nine rebounds. Shaw also scored in double figures with 13.

Beckwith and Hicks finished with 20 and 14 points, respectively, for Alma.
