Grantham, Pa. (Feb. 5, 2011) - Alvernia University (12-9, 5-5) went absolutely ice cold scoring just four points over the final 10 minutes in a 67-49 loss at Messiah College (14-6, 8-2) Saturday evening in Commonwealth Conference women's basketball action at Brubaker Auditorium.

Alvernia center Angela Altemose (Pottsville, Pa./Nativity BVM), who scored a team-best 12 points, pulled the Crusaders within three points, 48-45 on a layup with 9:57 to play, but Messiah scored 19 of the next 21 points to secure the win.

The Falcons, and most notably freshman Taylor Miller, were red hot shooting 47 percent from the floor including 69 percent (9-13) from beyond the 3-point arc.  Miller went 5-of-6 from the arc and finished with a game-high 21 points.

The lead changed hands seven times in the first half and the game looked like it would go down to the wire with Alvernia hanging around against one of the region's perennial best.

The Crusaders foreced a pair of ties early in the second half and Miller answered the Altemose layup with one of her five 3s and the Falcons took off from there.  The Crusaders got two free throws from Julie Hahn (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) over the final 10 minutes, and Kayla Long (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Central) scored on a layup on the final possession.  They went 0-for-10 from the floor before Long's layup and turned the ball over seven times.

Freshman Brittany Young (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) matched Altemose's 12 for the Crusaders while the Falcons totalled four players in double figures.

Alvernia continues the conference schedule next Wednesday at Widener.
